When parenting doesn’t seem to feel any easier…
If your the default parent who holds space for your children, anchors safety and regulation, tell me who is holding you?
Lately I’ve been having many chats with mothers mostly about how hard it is to parent the ways we want and know is best for our children. To hold space, be an anchor of calm amongst their storm and prioritise connection above all else takes work, a lot of inner work! And yet in those moments that are unseen by the outside world, you are doing what is the most important work there is. And so I ask, who is holding you? Who do you turn to for debrief, assurance or simply to crumble and be held?
Because we were never meant to do it alone.
Here are a few suggestions if you’re deep in parenting and needing support, clarity or simply feeling the overwhelm:
Find someone you trust who is more so aligned with your values as a parent to form a listening partnership
Connect with your inner child to assure them they are safe, to listen to her and all that arises
Move you body- dance, shake it out, go for a brisk walk or run, punch a pillow, stomp your feet, push against a wall
Journal- write it all out or record a voice note, express all the parts you feel would be judged or you feel too ashamed to say out loud. Write with your non-dominant hand to connect with your inner child and flow with what comes.
I’ve spent over 15 years supporting young people and families through their most vulnerable experiences. Now as a mother, doula and facilitator of reflective practice, I offer 1:1 sessions for mothers, a space to listen with empathy, non-judgement and care.
